A bathroom is often the most private room in the house. Yet it is usually designed as a purely practical space. At Elementa Interior Design, we see it differently. A bathroom can be a personal sanctuary. A space for daily rejuvenation, not just a room you pass through in the morning.
How nice is it to really enjoy your time in the bathroom? To come home after a long day, run a bath, and switch off. In this article, we share how we design a wellness bathroom that feels like a spa at home.
It starts with you: the individual questionnaire
Every bathroom design at Elementa starts with an individual questionnaire. Before we draw a single line, we want to know how you use the space.
Do you prefer a bath or a shower? Are you a morning person who needs to be ready in ten minutes? Or is the evening your time to slow down? Do you share the bathroom with a partner? How much storage do you really need? Which products do you use every day?
The answers shape everything. The layout. The size of the vanity. The position of the bathtub. Even the type of light. A wellness bathroom is deeply personal. Two clients will never get the same design.
Refined proportions
Luxury bathroom design is not about adding more. It is about getting the proportions right.
The bathtub needs space around it, so it can stand as the centrepiece. The vanity needs to be wide enough for two, without taking over the room. The shower needs enough depth to feel generous. Walkways need to feel open and easy.
In the bathroom shown here, the freestanding bathtub sits on a raised plinth in dark green marble. The plinth frames the bath and gives it a stage. A thin line of concealed light runs along the base, so the plinth seems to float in the evening. The vanity on the left runs in the same green marble, which ties the two zones together.
Good proportions are what make a space feel calm. When every element has the right size and the right place, the room simply feels right. You don’t always notice why. You just feel it.
Everything is connected, without feeling overly present
A spa bathroom needs a lot of technology and a lot of storage. But none of it should be on show.
We hide what doesn’t need to be seen. Storage is built into the vanity and into recessed niches. Towels and robes have their own place. Toiletries disappear behind closed doors. The result is a clean, quiet room where nothing distracts.
The same goes for technology. Music comes from discreet ceiling speakers. Heating, ventilation and lighting are all controlled from one place. Everything is connected, without feeling overly present.
This takes careful planning early in the project. Speakers, drains, lighting and ventilation are part of the MEP design. They need to be coordinated before the walls are closed. That is why we involve these details from the start, not at the end.

Wallpaper behind the bathtub: the place to be bold
In the 3D render shown here, we used wallpaper in the bathroom. Many clients are surprised by this. Wallpaper in a bathroom?
Yes, if you place it in the right spot. The wall behind the bathtub is a dry area. It does not get the direct splashes of a shower. That makes it the perfect place to work with something more outspoken.
Here, we chose a botanical design with soft green leaves and fine lines in muted tones. The pattern brings nature into the room. It works like a piece of art behind the bath. Slim vertical trims in a warm metal finish divide the wall into panels. They add rhythm and pick up the warm tones of the fittings.
A few things to keep in mind when you use wallpaper in a bathroom:
Choose a product made for wet rooms. – Many suppliers have vinyl or fibreglass collections designed for bathrooms. They handle humidity much better than standard paper.
Plan the ventilation. – Good extraction keeps the humidity low and protects the finish for many years.
Keep it away from direct water. – Behind the bathtub or on the wall opposite the vanity works well. Inside the shower does not.
Let the pattern lead. – When the wallpaper is bold, keep the rest of the materials calm. Here, the marble, timber and white bathtub let the wall take the spotlight.
The result is a bathroom with personality. It feels less like a hotel and more like your own home.
Water taps make the difference
The fittings are the jewellery of a bathroom. You touch them every day, so quality matters.
In this design, a slim floor-standing bath mixer rises next to the tub. It is elegant and practical at the same time. The finish of the taps should match the rest of the room. Brushed, matte or warm metal finishes all create a very different feel. We always select them together with the client, as part of the full material palette.
Lighting is key
Lighting is the most important element in a wellness bathroom. It sets the mood.
We often work with dimmable lights, so you can adjust the room to your mood. Bright and clear in the morning, when you need to get ready. Soft and warm in the evening, when you want to relax in the bath.
We layer the lighting:
Task lighting – at the mirror, for shaving and make-up.
Ambient lighting, – such as the concealed strip under the bath plinth and indirect light in niches.
Decorative lighting, – such as the pendant over the vanity in this design, which adds a soft glow and a sculptural touch.
With the right lighting plan, the same bathroom can feel like a fresh morning space and a candlelit spa in one day.
Natural materials for a calm feel
Wellness is about the senses. What you touch matters as much as what you see.
Natural stone, such as the green marble in this design, brings depth and a sense of quality. Warm timber, like the small side table next to the bath, softens the room. A large-format floor tile in a light tone keeps the space open and easy to clean. Together, these materials create a calm, balanced atmosphere.
Styling: the finishing touch
Once the design is in place, styling brings it to life. This is where a bathroom turns into a spa.
Think of rich bathrobes and soft, thick towels, neatly folded on an open shelf. Beautiful fragrances, soaps and perfumes in elegant bottles. A small vase with dried branches or fresh greenery. A side table next to the bath for a book, a candle or a cup of tea.
These details are small, but they make a big difference. They turn your daily routine into a moment for yourself.
Bring the spa home
A wellness bathroom is an investment in how you feel every day. It is the first room you use in the morning and the last one at night. It deserves the same attention as your living room or kitchen.
At Elementa Interior Design, we design luxury bathrooms as part of our full residential interior design service in Dubai. From the first questionnaire to the final styling, we guide you through every step.
